HIV Testing
Have you been
tested?
Common Ground
offers free and anonymous oral HIV testing and counseling services
at our agency and at several venues in the community. A list of our
current testing sites appears below.
Why get
tested?
There are many
reasons why you might want to get an HIV test:
You’re sexually active and are concerned about your health.
You have had unprotected (meaning no latex barrier) oral, vaginal or
anal sex.
You and your sexual partner(s) want to know each other’s status.
You have had a sexual partner who is HIV-positive.
You drink alcohol and/or use drugs.
You inject drugs or other substances.
You just want to know.
Getting tested for HIV provides you with vital information
about your health. Should you decide to test at a Common Ground
site, you will be able to ask questions and address concerns in a
safe and confidential setting with a certified, non-judgmental
counselor.
We also provide free latex condoms, dental dams, female
condoms, personal lubricants and educational materials.
You’ll return for results in a week. At that time, your
counselor will share with you the outcome of your test and provide
you with any necessary referrals. If you test positive, we can
assist you in accessing HIV health and social services. If you test
negative, you can use Common Ground as a resource to help you stay
negative (see our section on Prevention & Outreach).
Don’t like blood tests?
No worries! Common Ground offers the Orasure® Test.
Orasure® is an oral test performed by inserting a cotton swab into
the mouth and placing it between the gum and cheek to collect cells
that can be tested for the presence of HIV antibodies. The Orasure®
test is an extremely accurate and sensitive test.
